Thanksgiving is right around the corner and the holidays are moving full steam ahead. Don’t let the hustle and bustle of decking the halls stop you from getting the most out of your job hunt.

Here are four ways to get the most out of your job search during the holiday season…

1.Beat the competition.

The holiday season is a great time to kick your job search into high gear. While other applicants are sleeping off their turkey dinner and resting for a long weekend, you can take the lead.  Use your down time to polish your resume and send it out during slow business weeks. When hiring managers return to work, your resume will be waiting in their inbox for review.

2. Time it right.

Some companies hire before the end of the fiscal year, using what is left in the budget to fill jobs that otherwise might be cut. Conversely, other companies wait for the new budget to come out in January so they can hire employees for the new year. Often, employees who are looking to leave their job will make their exit during this time of year so they too can start fresh in the new year. This leaves their spot open for someone like you. Companies want to start the new year with the right talent, make sure you are available!

3. Look for seasonal work.

Many companies hire contingent workers during this time of year. They need help with the end of the year budget crunch or extra hands on deck for the rush of consumers. This is a great opportunity to put yourself out there. Taking a temporary position will open you up to new contacts and new skills to add to your resume. Plus, a little extra spending money can help you spread that holiday cheer.

4. Network.

As you bounce from one ugly sweater party to the next, don’t be shy to ask your friends and family if they know of any companies that are hiring. Maybe your Uncle’s coworker just mentioned that she’s thinking of hiring a new assistant to handle a project for her. Maybe your cousin’s boyfriend just started with a new company that is hiring. If you don’t ask, you’ll never know.

The holidays can be a stressful time for anyone, especially if you are unemployed or unhappy with your current job. Use these weeks to perfect your resume, send it out, try something new and foster your network. Maybe you’ll be using that champagne toast on New Year’s Eve to commend your brand new career.
